On March 4, the agreed pause on the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on products from Mexico ends; Will it be cancelled?

Despite negotiations between Mexico and the United States (US), the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump have not yet been suspended. In February, the U.S. president agreed to temporarily pause these tariffs until March, while the Mexican government pledged to strengthen efforts aroundthe migration crisis and drug trafficking to the United States.

In this context, the first president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, said that she will talk again with the Republican to address this situation and close the deal.
At the presidential conference 'Mañanera del Pueblo' on Tuesday, February 25, held in the Treasury Room of the National Palace, the Mexican president shared that this week she will seek to have a call with her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, to talk about the issue of tariffs and close an agreement that benefits both nations.

Sheinbaum stated that the agreement must be closed before March 4, and although a date for the call with President Trump has not yet been confirmed, the Mexican president is confident of reaching an understanding to avoid tariff tariffs. "It's important not to rush into decisions based on isolated statements," Sheinbaum explained, referring to Trump's recent statements about reciprocity in tariffs.

It is on March 4, in the call we said that they are suspended for a month while we have dialogue, mainly on the issue of trade and security, today these dialogues continue. We are going to wait for this cycle to close, hoping to have an agreement with the United States [...] We hope that this call [with Trump] can be given, so that we can close the agreement. We still don't have a date [for the call]," added the head of the Mexican Federal Executive.

In this speech, Sheinbaum emphasized that the talks not only revolve around trade, but also security, as part of joint efforts to combat drug trafficking and irregular migration. In this context, Mexico has deployed 10,000 members of the National Guard on the border with the United States, as part of an agreement for the temporary suspension of tariffs.

Despite the differences in speeches, Sheinbaum assured that negotiations continue in order to close the agreement with the United States on time. In this sense, the Mexican president has stressed the importance of listening to Trump's full statements, who also spoke about tariff reciprocity with other countries such as Canada.
